April in Lawrence brings an energetic crescendo. You can almost feel the acceleration of scholarly fervor as thousands of learners across Mount Oread and its surrounding valleys thrum in cognition – a collective beehive of the minds. And just as this heady mental energy approaches its apex, a smattering of friendly white tents once again sprout up along New Hampshire Street.

As a rooted east-sider, the Saturday morning Lawrence Farmers Market is woven into the fabric of warm season life in Lawrence. Extending well beyond the richness of its locally grown fare, the market bursts with sensory dimension in every form. Eyes brighten to assertively yellow sunflowers as the sizzle of tamales wafts across the breeze. The silky petting of a neighbor’s pup calms, just as a bluegrass jam electrifies the morning air. And it’s hard to beat the earthily sweet taste of a freshly roasted chestnut. Like a quirkily-shaped heirloom carrot, the market offers intrigue and meaning from nearly every angle of approach. It’s the alluring destination to spark culinary wonder – where an early bike run delivers botanical gems like bubblegum plums and pink ginger root. It’s the community percolator, where a run for dinner tomatoes turns into bump-ins with co-workers or teachers, fellow musicians or teammates – morphing into impromptu lemonades or spin-off jaunts about town. And it’s a grounding haven that envelops the weary parent who finally wagon-rolls their toddlers in at eight minutes to close. For just a moment, life slows as you take it all in… As you nurse an iced coffee and decadent (incentive) brownies, everyone starts to feel a bit more human.

Amidst the laudable but often abstract and future-focused quest to expand our minds, the farmers market offers an essential complement. It grounds us at earth level, tugging us back into our bodies with the reminder that we are all here, right now. That there’s no time like the present to feel and relish all that we cultivate together. I give the Lawrence Farmers Market 4.5 stars.
